Most flagship smartphones and smartwatch that support wireless charging tech need to be placed over a charging dock for the entire duration of charging. However, a company called Energous is working on a solution that would not require the device to be docked, instead charge wirelessly from a distance.
Energous has announced that it received FCC certification for the technology that allow devices to be wirelessly charge over-the-air at a distance of up to three feet. The company says the Wattup Mid Field transmitter deliver power to compatible devices via radio frequency energy.
This technology supports both contact-based and non-contact based wireless charging, as well as can charge multiple device at once. It will work with any "small electronic device, including smartphones, tablets, fitness trackers, smart watches, earbuds, wireless keyboards and mice, smart speakers and more."
The Wattup ecosystem works regardless of the manufacturer as it ensures interoperability between receivers and transmitters, making the entire ecosystem flexible and accessible to consumers and manufacturing partners.
Energous will be demonstrating its latest WattUp technology at CES 2018.
