Only a small list of app supports HDR (High Dynamic Range) video playback including YouTube, Nextflix and Google Play Movies. However, now it appears that Google will soon add HDR video support to Chrome browser on Android.
The information was found on two commits (1 | 2) on Chromium Gerrit (web-based team code collaboration tool for Chrome). According to these commits, Google Chrome for Andrid will be able to extract VP9 HRD meta data from the video container and pass it to the MediaCodec class.
In simple words, this means Chrome will support HDR video playback on compatible devices. However, it is not known when the HDR support for Chrome browser Android will be rolled out.
HDR videos allows viewers to experience movies and TV shows in stunning true to life color and stunning image quality with more clarity.
A handful of flagship such as Samsung Galaxy S8/Note, LG V30, Sony Xperia XZ Premium, Google's Pixel 2/Pixel 2 XL among others support HDR.
